POSITION OVERVIEW

The Safety Specialist will report directly to the SHE Manager and is responsible for supporting site-wide safety initiatives by promoting a culture of safety, ensuring regulatory compliance, and assisting in the implementation and maintenance of key safety and environmental programs. This role plays a critical part in maintaining operational safety, reducing risk, and supporting McCormick’s commitment to protecting its people and the environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Order materials including safety shoes, lockout tags, spill containment materials, safety project supplies, and meeting materials
  • Schedule required training and support Safety Functional Leader (SFL) meetings and schedules
  • Monitor required safety inspections and update the action log
  • Ensure timely resolution of issues listed in the action log
  • Maintain and update the chemical SDS book to match the current chemical master list; monitor incoming chemicals through the chemical approval process
  • Assist in updating Intelex documents and maintaining physical safety records
  • Review and load safety training content monthly or more frequently as needed
  • Conduct Gemba walks with a focus on safety
  • Review findings from BOS, near-miss reports, and Gemba walk data
  • Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and incident investigations
  • Obtain and maintain certifications including RCRA, HAZWOPER 24, and OSHA-30
  • Conduct risk assessments and manage the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) program
  • Collaborate with Maintenance to ensure completion of LOTO annual reviews, aerial lift and arc flash training, confined space equipment certification
  • Ensure dust collection and explosion protection systems are properly inspected and maintained
  • Confirm machine guarding and equipment safety measures are in place and functioning
  • Support FM Global (fire safety) compliance, and hot work/outside contractor protocols
  • Assist in the ergonomic program and change management processes for new/modified equipment or processes
  • Support emergency response planning, including drills and evacuation events
  • Assist with environmental responsibilities such as stormwater inspections, SSA, and SPCC compliance

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

      • Bachelor’s degree in safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in a safety or environmental role, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Solid knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other applicable regulatory standards
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence others and promote safety culture
  • Experience conducting audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety systems such as Intelex

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

      • OSHA 30, RCRA, and HAZWOPER 24 certifications
      • Experience in food manufacturing or a highly regulated industry
      • Familiarity with FM Global and SPCC, SSA, and stormwater compliance
      • Working knowledge of TPM and continuous improvement processes
