DIRECTOR, PACKAGING DEVELOPMENT

This new hire will work at McCormick's Technical Innovation Center (TIC), located in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The Director, Packaging Development will report to a VP, Global Sustainability & Packaging.

Position Overview:
Responsible for design, development and commercialization of all packaging projects which includes new product launches, cost savings, innovation, sustainability and improvement efforts. Manages all aspects of business project portfolio to meet and exceed the needs of its internal and external customers. Provides sound business sense and technical action such that projects meet objectives and provide tangible business benefit. Proactively manages all aspects of function to include Package Design, Development and Commercialization, Laboratory Services, Innovation, Sustainability and Specifications. This position supports the US Consumer Products Division and its internal and external manufacturing facilities. As a member of the Global Packaging Leadership team, this position collaborates with other business units to leverage the whole McCormick brain, and as agreed, share/adopt design, development and commercialization support to projects for other business units.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements annual plan for department to achieve requirements of the business    
  • Develops, maintains and takes action toward the future vision for Packaging; identifies and resolves gaps.    
  • Develops short and long term objectives for personnel; creates development and training plans to support individual and team growth; identifies and develops core competency areas; develops succession planning model.    
  • Responsible for the rollout of, and user-group activities for SAP Packaging Specifications.    
  • Identifies areas of best practice for wider use; develops collaborative forum with peers worldwide for application and sets global standards for activities within Packaging.    
  • Holds budget responsibility for department as well as department’s capital budget and appropriations.    
  • Responsible for packaging intellectual property creation, development and application for protection.    

 

Qualifications:

  • BSc in Packaging/Chemical/Material Engineering; alternate, but relevant, technical degree. MS/Ph.D in Engineering or Chemistry and/or Business management will be a plus.
  • 15+ years of leadership experience in packaging development in a role that is responsible for broad categories of projects. Experience within the food industry, consumer products, operations and quality assurance are required.
  • Experience working in a team environment and providing strong leadership to subordinates and project teams; demonstrated ability to routinely exercise sound business sense and good judgment Management experience in the areas of exempt and non-exempt personnel, testing laboratories, creative design, technical design and broad innovation.
  • In-depth understanding and application of concepts, principals and procedures in own technical area as well as multiple functions outside of own area. Strong knowledge of other functions and business unit organization and integrations. Possesses strong business and commercial awareness and application on a daily basis.
  • Interpersonal skills: Decision making, self confidence, effective communication, ability to drive new thinking and approach to work as needed. Displays communication and interpersonal skills that engage all functions and levels of the company on a wide variety of issues. Effective leadership and training in areas that aid the further development and advancement of group personnelInteracts with all levels of management. 
  • Communicates with other Mc units and draws support from other experienced resources as necessary to complete work and to proactively stay current on the initiatives in other businesses.
  • Leadership - CRITICAL. Management responsibility for a team and their collective workload; provides leadership, direction, priority setting, personnel development planning and workplan management
