Director, Materials & Process Technology

McCormick & Company, Inc., a global leader in the spice, flavor, and seasonings industry, is seeking a full-time Director, Materials & Process Technology. This new hire will work at McCormick's Technical Innovation Center located in Hunt Valley, MD and will be eligible to participate in McCormick's hybrid work program (50% onsite and 50% remote per month). The Director, Materials & Process Technology will report to the VP, Science & Technology.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This leadership position is responsible for the global strategic direction, development and execution of company research programs as well as driving applied research initiatives in line with McCormick strategy, LTP and business objectives. As a leader of a team of food scientists, engineers and chemists, the position drives and further develops Global Functional Operational Model for R&D by overseeing and developing best practices, operational procedures and provides expert technical support, technical skills training and development, troubleshooting and technical transfer to all BU’s R&D teams as a lead for Global R&D Centre of Expertise for key product platforms.  Senior R&D expert to advise McCormick leadership in area of material and process sciences and member of Science and Technology Leadership Team.

 

RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Strategic development, alignment with BU’s and execution of Company Research Program
  • Leads Centers of Excellence for key product platforms and oversees development and implementation of Best Practices and Standard Procedures and coordinates technical trouble shooting and support of all Company Business Units
  • Develops and manages technical training, skills development and technical transfer programs for McCormick
  • Develops and enhances high performance technical team and up to date
  • Instrumentations including pilot plant and responsible for department budget and CAAP’s
  • Owns technology scanning activities and external collaborations and represents McCormick Science and Technology group externally
  • Jointly with Legal team leads company IP/Patent Strategy and execution via Patent Committee leadership

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s in Food Science or Engineering, Analytical Chemistry or a closely related field or its equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years in Foods R&D, at least 5 years’ experience leading a group of research scientists
  • Track record of developing and managing technology development and research programs and Technical and/or Expertise Centers for R&D
  • Experience in managing IP and patent matters
  • Proven ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with product development, sensory science, quality assurance/regulatory and operations
  • Intimate working knowledge of the Food and Beverage Industry
  • Skilled in creating and communicating a compelling and inspiring narrative in the technical space
  • Strong ability to mentor, coach and manage technical personnel and develop talent and leaders
  • Decisive thinker, sound people judgment, ability to make the tough calls
  • Solution and action oriented

  • Ability to effectively delegate, maximizing productivity through people

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Food Science or Engineering, or a closely related field or its equivalent
