As part of the Global Corporate Sustainability team, the Director of Social Sustainability will shape and drive a holistic approach to social impact, focusing on social issues that are important to our stakeholders and complementing our environmentally-focused sustainability efforts. The role will develop and drive an integrated, enterprise-wide social sustainability plan that protects and enhances McCormick’s reputation and mitigates risk, identify impact opportunities and adapt proven solutions to drive decision-making that integrates social sustainability for material topics, while building relationships with external stakeholders. This role will also provide subject matter expertise and thought leadership in social sustainability best practices and emerging trends and represent the company in external engagements. This position reports to the Vice President of Global Sustainability and may require up to 20% travel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and drive an integrated, enterprise-wide social sustainability plan for McCormick that upholds McCormick’s reputation, drives value, and mitigates risk. Work with cross-functional teams to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses material social topics and includes policies, actions, and targets for McCormick’s own operations, value chain, and affected communities. Align plan with external stakeholder expectations and peer benchmarks. Establish governance and accountability mechanisms to support plan alignment, risk mitigation, and actioning against the path to delivery.
- Prepare for and integrate emerging regulatory requirements. Creates a glidepath for enabling compliance with current and emerging regulatory requirements (e.g. CSDDD) company-wide. Builds on and coordinates work across the organization, especial HR and Procurement teams leading on social impact in own operations and value chain, respectively.
- Identify impact opportunities and adapt proven solutions to drive decision-making that integrates social sustainability. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate social impact considerations into business processes, product development, and decision-making frameworks. Provide data-driven recommendations for improvements and provide guidance on implementation.
- Build relationships with external stakeholders and represent the company in prioritized external fora. Identify opportunities to showcase thought leadership and represent the company in prioritized external events and conferences. Liaise with external stakeholders, such as NGOs, to drive our social sustainability agenda and develop partnerships that enable collective action on social issues.
- Provide subject matter expertise and thought leadership in social sustainability best practices and emerging trends. Build awareness among employees at all levels to engage in social impact efforts. Partner with the Director Global Sustainability to proactively engage customers on McCormick’s social sustainability approach. Support responses to inquiries from customers, investors, and other stakeholders on social issues. Liaise with appropriate internal partners to provide a comprehensive view.
Required Qualifications:
- BA/BS Business, Social Science, Human Rights, Gender Studies, or relevant discipline.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in social impact, corporate social responsibility, sustainability, or related fields in public or private sector.
- Expertise in social sustainability/social impact in complex global supply chains and operations (e.g. human rights, forced labor, child labor, responsible recruitment, women’s empowerment, living income) for corporate entities.
- Evidence of designing and implementing social programs that support business objectives.
- Strong analytical skills to synthesize and communicate trends based on complex data.
- Expertise in social sustainability/social impact in complex global supply chains and operations (e.g. human rights, forced labor, child labor, responsible recruitment, women’s empowerment, living income).
- Understanding and awareness of evolving regulatory landscape for social sustainability (e.g. CSDDD, CSRD).
- Excellent communication and influencing skills.
- The ability to work globally taking into account the regional differences in cultures and work practices.
- Demonstrated history of effectively coordinating conflicting priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
- The ability to work cross-functionally and coordinate multiple workstreams toward a common objective.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Record of achievement in using effective influence and communication skills with individuals at all levels and functions.
- The ability to develop key metrics and drive and transparently track progress.

Base Salary: $121,900 - $219,410
Base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience for this role, and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer. This position is also eligible to participate in McCormick’s Incentive Bonus (MIB) Plan.
