This new hire will work  in Hunt Valley, MD or Geneva, IL. The Director, Technical Beverage BU will report to a VP, Beverages Business Unit North America.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director, Technical Beverage BU will support the Flavor Design and Applications Beverage Teams through applying and evaluating flavors in a variety of finished products.  Leads a Team of expert Flavorists and Applications scientists and technicians and serves as technical liaison with customers. This position manages activities associated with executing customer projects, directs technical aspects of flavor application into finished product, builds a high performing Applications team, and provides coaching and training across three US locations. Key accountabilities of the Director are to oversee planning and implementation of technical initiatives and align applications development efforts with growth objectives and customer needs. The Director, Technical Beverage BU partners with leadership to assure the Business Unit strategic business goals and customer objectives are met through team performance and facilitates teamwork within the Business Unit and across internal functional departments to provide technical solutions that meet customer’s expectations for quality and service. This position interfaces with business teams consisting of Sales, Marketing, Sensory, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Product Safety & Quality, and Finance to achieve business and P&L  goals.

 

Responsibilities

  • Directs all flavor development, innovation and commercialization in the Flavor Beverage Application labs.
  • Responsible for recruitment, training, performance evaluation, feedback, and career development for Applications team 
  • Build plans and lead execution of technical initiatives and tactical direction for Beverage Applications team 
  • Mentor and coach direct reports and other technical employees; build team of segment experts to support customer needs. Identify training needs and educational opportunities for team to continually improve capabilities and effectiveness 
  • Implement Best Practices for efficient, effective, high quality product development and project management 
  • Develops and maintains key contacts with customers and stakeholders, internally and externally. Creates a high level of engagement with external customers and internally with McCormick business executives. 
  • Oversee planning and implementation of technical initiatives and align applications development efforts with growth objectives and customer needs.
  • Champion teamwork on project execution from concept through commercialization; drives utilization of technologies to facilitate project execution and increase Win Rate.
  • Interfaces with business teams consisting of Sales, Marketing, Sensory, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Product Safety & Quality, and Finance to achieve business and P&L goals.
  • Provide optimistic, enthusiastic leadership to the Business Unit technical team Technical Leadership; Continuously build team’s ingredient knowledge & drive continuous product and process improvement 
  • Manage customer project execution process, including prioritization communication with customers and internal partners, and obtaining feedback on customer submissions 
  • Interface with Research & Innovation to provide direction on future technology needs and to transfer technology to Applications bench; attends and contributes to food industry technical meetings and symposia.

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Food Science/Technology, Food Engineering, Chemistry, Flavor or related field
  • 15 years of technical experience including at least 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Technical excellence in Flavor Creation or Flavor Applications
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience interacting with customers and partnering with commercial sales teams in product development, innovation and winning the business. 
  •  Ability to travel 10-25% 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Food Science, or related fields
  • Certified Flavor Chemist
