The new role of ESG Controller is responsible for strengthening and upholding ESG reporting, including leading the evaluation of mandatory ESG reporting (including any SEC requirements, EU / CSRD requirements, ISSB or other applicable regulatory requirements), and evaluating and implementing processes and controls that are responsive to regulatory requirements as well as enhancing existing processes associated with our annual voluntary PLP reporting. The ESG Controller will be a key member of McCormick’s Controllership function and will report to the VP & Controller. The ESG Controller will understand and strengthen ESG reporting process and controls; oversee ESG disclosure management, provide controllership oversight, and review / prepare filings (as required); and serve as knowledge lead for the evolving global ESG regulatory reporting requirements. The individual will identify, advise on and implement new ESG reporting and disclosure practices based on these regulatory requirements. The individual will also coordinate any required external assurance.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Serve as knowledge lead for evolving global regulatory reporting requirements related to ESG: Research and monitor regulatory developments and ESG disclosure requirements, keep current on evolving disclosure trends in the industry (benchmarking), and develop and execute recommendations for McCormick’s ESG reporting. Develop specialized knowledge in ESG regulation and reporting requirements. Provide training, education, and direction globally on financial reporting and controls aspects of ESG. Serve as an advisor and liaison between Controllership, Sustainability, and other business functions, in this cross-functional effort, to provide guidance on McCormick’s ESG reporting in alignment with approved and pending reporting regulations and related implications.
  • Provide ESG controllership oversight and prepare filings as required: Provide controllership oversight of ESG-related disclosures, wherever they are disclosed (PLP Report, external ESG ratings and rankings, Board reporting, etc.). Contributed to the development and related ESG disclosures in documents filed with regulatory bodies. Liaison with regional finance resources regarding statutory reporting and related ESG matters. Coordinate with PLP team regarding overall ESG RRC approval process regarding various third-party ESG rating and rankings. 
  • Understand and strengthen ESG reporting process, controls and policies: Conduct ESG reporting assurance readiness assessment, liaise with internal auditors and external consultants, and remediate assurance readiness gaps in ESG reporting process and controls to meet evolving regulatory requirements. Partner with SOX control leaders in strengthening controls and processes for ESG reporting. Manage third party assurance and attestation of accuracy, completeness, and reliability of ESG information within external reports. Leverage ESG reporting software capabilities for documentation and audit trail. Lead the development and refinement of ESG standards, principles, and policies.

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in finance, business, sciences, engineering, or relevant field
  • 10+ years relevant experience preferred
  • Prior experience with assessing, designing, and implementing end-to-end processes, procedures, and internal controls
  • Strong process and controls mindset, with relevant experience in accounting preferred
  • Ideal candidate to possess deep understanding of internal control concepts and is a self-starter who can lead the development and execution of processes associated with evolving ESG standards
  • Proficiency with researching regulatory literature, associated market trends, and benchmarking analysis against pending regulations
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant ESG standards and reporting frameworks (e.g., SASB, GRI, TCFD, SDGs) is preferred
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of strategic and operational risks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English will be required to enable effective communication
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with senior stakeholders and build rapport across functional boundaries
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple project / deliverables
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
