Global Sustainability Director

The Global Sustainability Director will report to the Chief Sustainability Officer. This new hire will work at McCormick's global headquarters located in Hunt Valley, MD and will be eligible to participate in our 50/50 hybrid program (50% remote, 50% onsite).

POSITION OVERVIEW

This position will lead development and implementation of the strategic framework for the Sustainability aspects of the Purpose-led Performance program and integration into our business processes.  The major focus will be to position McCormick to thrive in the transition to the new low carbon economy, ensuring that our sustainability program enables McCormick to deliver our goals ahead of our peers and that this performance is a differentiator with our key customers.  This position will orchestrate the effective and efficient implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance(ESG) programs throughout the company’s value chain and reports directly to the Chief Sustainability Officer.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic direction in a rapidly developing space to ensure McCormick achieves its business objectives and is seen as a leader in Sustainability. 
  • Serve on the PLP organizational committees and ensuring proper governance of related work is in place. 
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in Environmental Sustainability and be familiar with leading metrics and standards such as CDP, Task force on Financially Related Climate Disclosures (TCFD), Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and others. 
  • Monitor the impact to the business in climate change and work with senior business leaders to ensure the business is resilient and can thrive in the low carbon economy.  Utilize mechanics such as the TCFD, ISSB others.
  • Develop and manage long-term, results-oriented sustainability strategy that embeds sustainable and environmental best practice into operations, and business processes globally.
  • Partner with the business and supply chain functions to develop key strategies for achieving the Sustainability goals and an implementation plan for business unit personnel.  Leads enterprise wide execution plan and results roll-up.
  • Partner with R&D innovators to ensure key net zero technologies are delivered for our facilities for the transition away from fossil fuels.
  • Lead critical ESG surveys and customer requests related surveys, such as CDP and pertinent ESG rating organizations to ensure we have the plan to achieve top tier recognition.
  • Develop, seek advice and approval from senior management for implementation of long-term sustainability objectives for the organization which meet the needs of customers, investors, and other stakeholders, while complying with internationally recognized standards and benchmarks.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key ESG Stakeholders and nongovernmental organizations such as the UN Global Compact, the World Wildlife Fund, CARE, World Benchmarking Organization, other.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in scientific or engineering field such as Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry or Engineering.
  • 15+ years’ experience managing Environmental Sustainability in manufacturing or CPG industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in the industry on climate change, science-based targets, policies and standards.
  • Strong technical competency in developing global strategies based on science, external reporting frameworks and international climate agreements.
  • The ability to work globally taking into account the regional differences in cultures and work practices.
  • A key understanding of media and associated issues.
  • Demonstrated history of strategic leadership and broad-based thinking balancing effective controls with a vision of future needs for a growing corporation.
  • Demonstrated history of effectively coordinating conflicting priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Technical knowledge of manufacturing facilities and associated EHS management systems.
  • This position requires up to 20% travel.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters in Engineering, Science or MBA is a plus.
