Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor and with other members of the staff, Lab Tech III leads the preparation of sensory tests for a variety of methodologies. Technicians are involved with test preparation by obtaining samples, assembling supplies, maintaining lab cleanliness, collaborating with scientists, leading the cook procedures and documenting testing procedures/outcomes.

To meet testing needs, techs are coordinating implementation by aligning goals with Sensory Scientists, developing sample cooking procedures, delegating tasks to team of temp workers, documenting test implementation and adjusting SOPs as necessary to ensure accuracy and repeatability. Obtains supplies for testing through grocery ordering and coordination with other departments. Responsible for maintaining organization, cleanliness, and safety in the lab. Prepares for testing by practicing SOPs, hosting benchtop evaluations, portioning testing materials prior to the test, and delegating implementation roles among a team of temp workers. Documents test implementation for scientist presentation and future testing reference. Supports other areas of Sensory testing where necessary within the department, including setting up discrimination panels, involving sample prep and recruitment of panelists within the building. Techs also support descriptive panels running 4 days per week by obtaining samples, cooking products to serve to panelists, implementing tests per request instruction, documenting sample conditions and communicating with the panel lead. Techs work on a team to meet the broad range of testing needs within the department.

 

Key Responsibilities

    • Implementing Sensory panels by planning materials and procedures ahead of testing day, delegating tasks to support staff, participating in panel implementation, preparing food samples, documenting testing procedures and samples, and assisting with clean up.
    • Ordering supplies, maintaining general laboratory cleanliness and organization
    • Working independently and/or as a member of a team to successfully implement tests
    • Prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment to minimize downtime and to improve testing implementation
    • Communicating clearly and honestly to all members of the testing team

 

Required Qualifications

    • High School diploma required
    • 12 College credits in the sciences or 2 years lab experience
    • Proficient with MS Programs - Word, Excel, Outlook
    • Excellent analytical, mathematical, writing and attention to detail skills
    • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and work with minimal supervision
    • Basic laboratory skills, food preparation skills, and excellent housekeeping skills
    • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated flexibility with tight deadlines/shifting priorities
    • Maintain confidentiality of information
    • Strong planning and task organization skills
    • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks
    • Comfortable and skilled in delegation
    • Ability to perform moderate physical work over prolonged periods while standing and able to lift 50 pounds
    • Excellent attendance

 

The pay range for this position is $22.52 - $33.78.
