Principal Scientist, Packaging - Digital Ecommerce

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Packaging Innovation is essential to our growth ambitions and sustainability goals.  The packaging Innovation team has passion for exploring new technologies, materials, and designs. We create sustainable, consumer-preferred packages while also acting as stewards of the brand. This role is responsible for supporting packaging innovation in the North America region with emphasis on packaging designed specifically for Ecommerce. 

 

The Principal Scientist, Packaging – Digital Ecommerce will influence the strategy and commercial priorities for ecommerce, developing unique offerings for McCormick’s direct-to-consumer as well as online grocery, Amazon, and other ecommerce platforms. The role requires responsibility for technology exploration, consumer learning, selection of materials, package design, determination of performance requirements, setting quality standards, creating packaging specifications and coordinating activities with a range of internal and external business partners. The role requires a combination of creativity, strategic thinking, problem solving, technical and business knowledge, project management and cross-functional team operation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The design, development and commercialization of ecommerce packaging for consumers, manufacturing, distribution and customers. This role includes:

  • Mastery of Ecommerce requirements, test methods, and design principles
  • Utilize sustainable materials and sustainable design principles to achieve related goals
  • Provide package design, development, material selection and commercialization activities
  • Interaction across multiple levels, working cross-functionally, managing project planning activities, and provide technical guidance
  • Support multiple projects with accountability to deliverables and milestones
  • Plan and prioritize work to ensure deadlines & customer expectations are met
  • Apply established standards, controls and processes


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or an alternate relevant technical discipline
  • 10+ years of packaging development and project management experience as part of a cross functional team
  • Expertise in the areas of plastic injection molding & injection blow molding, glass, laminate structures, and paper-based materials
  • Experience with the manufacturing environment
  • Creative problem solving and solution skills; attention to detail in work
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and teamwork
  • Analytical skills to evaluate complex and sometimes ambiguous situations
  • Business and commercial awareness & ability to influence other business members
  • Experience with SAP, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, C.A.P.E. palletization software


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPG industry experience
  • Graduate degree (MS, MBA, ME)
  • Expertise with ideation processes, consumer learning tools, technology analysis
