Principal Scientist, Packaging Development - Hunt Valley, MD

This new hire will work at the Technical Innovation Center, located in Hunt Valley, MD. The Principal Scientist will report to a Senior Packaging Development Manager.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This Principal Packaging Developer role is responsible for supporting the Base Business which is comprised of projects across our Consumer, Food Service and Flavor Solutions business segments.  Projects extend across Branded Line Extensions, Sustainability, Private Brands, and Supply Chain support inclusive of business continuity plans, and operational changes in plant capabilities and equipment.

 

This role is responsible for packaging efforts that include selection of materials, determination of performance requirements, setting quality standards, creating packaging specifications and coordinating activities with a range of business partners from Procurement to Operations.  This role requires a combination of technical and business knowledge, project management and cross-functional team operation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Projects are focused in areas of high impact and investment which require significant experience in the design, development and commercialization of plastic, glass and flexible containers for consumers, manufacturing, distribution and customers. This role includes:
  • Interaction across all levels, working cross-functionally, managing project planning activities, and providing technical guidance
  • Providing package design, development, material selection and commercialization activities
  • Supporting multiple projects that are moderate-to-high in scope and complexity, with accountability to deliverables and milestones
  • Planning and prioritizing work to ensure deadlines & customer expectations are met
  • Enforcing established standards, controls and processes
  • Mentoring, teaching, training others within the function

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Package Engineering, Packaging Design, Packaging Technology or an alternate relevant technical discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years of packaging development and project management experience as part of a cross functional team within the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry
  • Strong applied knowledge in the areas of plastic injection molding & injection blow molding, glass, laminate structures, and paper-based materials
  • Creative problem solving and solution skills; attention to detail in work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, creating compelling direction and teamwork
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate complex and sometimes ambiguous situations
  • Strong business and commercial awareness & ability to influence other business members
