Senior Director, Global Sustainability

McCormick & Company, Inc., a global leader in the spice, flavor, and seasonings industry, is seeking a full-time Senior Director, Global Sustainability. The Senior Director, Global Sustainability will report to the Chief Sustainability Officer. This new hire will be based at McCormick's global headquarters in Hunt Valley, Maryland and will be eligible to participate in our hybrid work program (50% onsite and 50% remote per month).

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This position will lead development and implementation of the strategic framework for the Sustainability aspects of the Purpose-led Performance program and integration into our business processes.  The major focus will be to position McCormick to thrive in the transition to the new low carbon economy, ensuring that our sustainability program enables McCormick to deliver our goals ahead of our peers and that this performance is a differentiator with our key customers and ESG Stakeholders.  The position will drive climate and sustainability practice globally and ensure that McCormick actions are aligned with pathways to near-term greenhouse gas reductions consistent with 1.5°C by 2030 and net-zero by 2050. A proven knowledge of carbon abatement strategies and private sector engagement protocols are essential. This position reports directly to the Chief Sustainability Officer and requires up to 20% travel.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • In partnership with Chief Sustainability Officer, develop and manage long-term, results-oriented sustainability strategy that embeds climate and sustainable best practices into operations, and business processes globally. Lead ESG policy development and execution, including future PLP strategy enhancements. Serve as the subject matter expert in Climate and Environmental Sustainability and be familiar with leading metrics and standards such as CDP, Task force on Financially Related Climate Disclosures (TCFD), International Sustainability Standards Board(ISSB),, Eu’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive(CSRD),  Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and others.  
  • Develop climate abatement strategies and Monitor climate change impact to the business and work with senior business leaders to ensure the business is resilient and can thrive in the low carbon economy. 
  • Develop and manage long-term, results-oriented sustainability strategy that embeds sustainable and environmental best practice into operations, and business processes globally. Develop and advance Private sector engagement strategies.
  • Partner with the business and supply chain functions to develop key strategies for achieving the climate and sustainability goals and an implementation plan for business unit personnel.  Leads enterprise wide execution plan and results roll-up.
  • Partner with R&D innovators to ensure key net zero technologies are delivered for our facilities for the transition away from fossil fuels.
  • Partner with PLP Governance Council, Marketing and Communication teams on PLP execution including engagement of MKC teams behind our PLP workstreams.
  • Develop, seek advice and approval from senior management for implementation of long-term sustainability objectives for the organization which meet the needs of customers, investors, and other stakeholders, while complying with internationally recognized ESG standards and benchmarks.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key ESG stakeholders and nongovernmental organizations such as the UN Global Compact, the World Wildlife Fund, CARE, IDH, GIZ, IFC, World Benchmarking Organization, others.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in scientific or engineering field such as Sustainability, Environmental Science, Chemistry or Engineering.
  • 15+ years’ experience managing Climate and Environmental Sustainability in a global organization.

  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in the industry on climate change, science-based targets, policies and ESG standards.

  • Strong technical competency in developing global strategies based on science, external reporting frameworks and international climate agreements.

  • The ability to work globally, with clear understanding of regional differences in cultures and work practices.

  • A key understanding of media and associated issues.

  • Demonstrated history of strategic thought leadership and broad-based thinking balancing effective controls with a vision of future ESG needs for a growth organization.

  • Demonstrated history of effectively coordinating conflicting priorities in a fast-paced work environment. 

  • Ability to obtain senior management consensus on agenda and objectives.

  • The position interacts with all levels of management and company personnel regarding best practices in the ESG space on climate change, science-based targets, policies and standards.

  • This includes updates with senior management and reporting on ESG commitment and progress.

  • The position interacts with global governmental and non-governmental organizations and business associations pertaining to climate, environmental and sustainability.

  • The ability to represent the business on Environmental and Sustainability matters with third parties including key customers, investors, regulatory officials and trade associations

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Technical knowledge of manufacturing facilities and associated EHS management systems.

  • Ability to obtain senior management consensus on agenda and objectives.

  • The ability to explain and train non-experts on climate, environmental and sustainability matters.  

  • Record of achievement in using effective influence and communication skills with individuals at all levels and functions.

  • The ability to develop key metrics which show company climate, environment and Sustainability performance.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MBA, PhD degree with climate emphasis is a plus
  • Working knowledge of global ESG standards and Private Sector Engagement with understanding of farmer resilience and community development.
