Senior Manager, Packaging Development

This new hire will work at the Technical Innovation Center, located in Hunt Valley, MD. The Senior Manager, Packaging Development will report to a VP, Global Sustainability and Packaging.

Position Overview:

Responsible for design, development and commercialization of packaging projects which includes new product launches, cost savings, sustainability and supply chain improvement efforts. Provides sound business sense and technical action such that projects meet objectives and provide tangible business benefit.  This role supports multiple internal and external manufacturing facilities and combines technical knowledge, project management and cross-functional team skills to provide a source of packaging services. This position includes responsibility for people management and development.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Interacts with all levels of management; works cross-functionally; participates in project planning activities, and provides technical guidance.
  • Develops short and long term objectives for personnel; creates development and training plans to support individual and team growth; identifies and develops core competency areas; develops succession planning model.
  • Identifies areas of best practice for wider use; develops collaborative forum with peers worldwide for application and sets global standards for activities within Packaging.
  • Plans and prioritizes work to insure deadlines and customer expectations are met. Enforces established standards, controls and processes.
  • Regularly works under demanding deadlines.


Required Qualifications:

  • BSc in Package Engineering; Engineering, Science or relevant technical degree.
  • 15+ years of packaging development and project management experience as part of a project team who is responsible for design and implementation of cross-functional projects.
  • Experience in the food industry, consumer products, plant environment and QA aspects are all preferable.
  • Experience working in a team environment and providing strong leadership to subordinates and project teams; demonstrated ability to routinely exercise sound business sense and good judgment.
  • Management experience in the areas of exempt and non-exempt personnel.
  • Management responsibility for a team and their collective workload; provides leadership, direction, priority setting, personnel development planning and workplan management.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment in high pressure, sensitive situations; ability to handle conflict in a professional manner; demonstrated PC skills with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software and C.A.P.E.
  • In-depth knowledge of procedures and concepts within own technical/subject area.
  • Decision making, self-confidence, effective communication.
  • Ability to create and maintains connections to industry peer group, universities, NGO’s and consultancies for knowledge and business application.
  • Key source of technical knowledge and application across broad categories of packaging for Division and other business units.
