Position Overview

The Senior Sensory Scientist plans, collects, analyzes, interprets and reports accurate sensory and consumer data that results in actionable product development guidance. This Scientist delivers excellent sensory and consumer guidance to research projects, the development and improvement of new and existing products, and the development and implementation of best practice sensory methodology.  This role also includes managing the best practices and policies for the McCormick global sensory community.  It would involve communicating best practices; advising global sensory colleagues on sensory questions; and heading up the global sensory scientist community with monthly virtual meetings.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Identifies the specific sensory and consumer research needs of product development teams and other customers
  • Designs, implements, analyzes, interprets and reports research results that evaluates the performance of products, guide the product development process, and support product innovation
  • Frames product developers’ research needs into actionable sensory and consumer studies
  • Provides technical direction and mentoring to global sensory community.  Documents policies and protocols and communicates McCormick sensory best practices for global sensory community
  • Assists in the development of new, improved and/or more cost effective descriptive and consumer science research tools, methods and processes

 

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Works with key stakeholders to develop their understanding of Consumer Science and the value to the businesses with the goal of having Consumer Science integral to business and processes
  • Conducts research and development in the areas of Sensory Science that are of interest to the corporation
  • Stays current with literature and information about sensory evaluation

 

Required Qualifications

  • MS in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology or another related field
  • 7 to 10 years experience in Sensory and Consumer Research. 
  • General understanding of how the food industry performs. 
  • Detailed and advanced understanding of the Sensory Field and all of it's functions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Compusense Software in Sensory;  

  • R and/or XL Stats in statistics

  • Excellent Technical Writer

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology, or another related field
  • Qualitative training and demonstrated experience in moderation
  • Minimum 5 years in major project team leadership capacities

  • Proficiency in statistical analysis

  • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment

  • Experience successfully presenting to customers
