The Materials Manager manages the near and long term planning process to assure that all requirements are met while balancing resource availability in addition to supporting day-to-day operations of the warehouse department to include the receiving, storing and moving of raw materials into production.  The Materials Manager interacts with other function heads to ensure operational effectiveness to ensure external customers are assured problem free service.  S/he also ensures compliance with department and plant objectives in the areas of efficiency, budget compliance, regulatory compliance, safety and training while supporting a high-performance work system (HPWS) that promotes common objectives.  These objectives are achieved through teamwork, a culture of comprehensive continuous improvement and attainment of established process reliability goals and other scorecard metrics as they are defined.



  • Monitors and reviews all purchase orders and plans to include the following:
    • Reviewing the recommended purchases output of the daily planning run and acting on the recommendations – accept, reject, or postpone.
    • Meeting daily with members of the Materials Team to review the raw material shortage report and arriving at a negotiated plan to limit expense while also satisfying customer demands.
    • Working closely with Corporate Purchasing Department to learn of material shortages or forward buying opportunities and communicating such actions to the Plant Leadership Team.
    • Establishing and monitoring EOQ objectives to drive lower total cost purchasing decisions, and achieving inventory turn goals.
    • Keeping material stock outs at the absolute minimum by reviewing and updating safety stock data for all raw materials.  Working closely with the Purchasing to insure MOQ’s (made to order quantities), lead-times, and quantity forecasts are accurate. 
    • Directing and supporting prioritization to achieve reliability goals.
  • Works closely with scheduling team to ensure that efficient, low cost schedules are produced and the lowest possible cost per pound is attained by:
    • Staying familiar with scheduling activities to serve as back-up scheduler
    • Learning schedule sequencing and lot size quantities (Economic Run Quantities) to insure optimum plant scheduling
    • Reviewing shortage report for finished goods and raw materials and adjusting where required.
    • Working closely with the Sales to insure forecasts match up with production and capacity.
    • Working closely with Operations, Quality and other functional team members to support the day to day activities and provide a source for continuous improvement opportunities through the Materials function.
  • Keeps customer service strategies in line with requests from the Corporate Supply Chain group.  This includes:
    • Communicating to field sales force and corporate SBU’s (strategic business units) to determine proper stocking levels of materials.
    • Coordinating FTO’s (first time orders) with scheduler and sales as needed.
    • Participating in monthly S&OP reviews with Corporate Supply Chain representatives.
    • Communicating with Corporate Supply Chain representatives on the Service Strategy database requirements.
    • Participating in meetings and conference calls regarding Supply Chain issues as needed.
  • Administers the slow moving and obsolete inventory (SLOB) review each month.  The objective of keeping SLOB inventory at lowest possible level will be accomplished by:
    • Running the aged and defective materials report on a routine basis to identify problem materials.
    • Working with corporate Supply Chain representatives and internal scheduling team to reduce overall SLOB exposure.
    • Coordinating disposal of SLOB materials with other departments as required.
  • Oversees and directs warehouse personnel to include the following activities:
    • Maintains oversight of Establishes and monitors operational procedures for activities such as verification of incoming and outgoing shipments, handling and disposition of materials, cycle counting, and keeping warehouse inventory current by lot number and FIFO dates.
    • Confers with Department heads to ensure coordination of warehouse activities of other functions such as production, records control, purchasing and quality control.
    • Coordinates inventory software changes.
    • Supervises warehouse personnel and cycle count positions and program
  • Leads the purchasing, scheduling and warehouse teams in a manner consistent with the core beliefs and guiding principles of McCormick’s High Performance System.
    • Manages employee relations
    • Provides performance feedback and oversees development/training plans for individuals on the team
    • Uses performance and development tools to document and facilitate improvement/recognition discussions
    • Removes barriers that prevents the team from achieving their goals and rewards achievement



  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management, Supply Chain Logistics, Engineering, or Business
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in Materials and Warehouse Management to include Planning, Purchasing, Scheduling and Logistics
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience leading teams and managing direct reports
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, decision making, facilitation skills and leadership skills
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work in a complex and fast paced environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, Project, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Effective communication (both oral and written) skills with demonstrated ability to present ideas without formal authority
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in high pressure, sensitive situations
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and days as needed to meet business demands
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team-based environment
  • Excellent problem solving skills.



  • Proficiency in SAP or Sage X3
  • APICS or similar certification
  • Knowledge and experience with plant operations, packaging and processing equipment
  • Ability to proactively lead and coach teams to solve problems, multi-task, deliver continuous improvement initiatives, establish sound operating procedures, automatic downtime monitoring and other improvement systems
