Principal Scientist, Nutrition & Dietary Supplements

This new hire will work at our Global Headquarters located in Hunt Valley, MD. The Principal Scientist, Nutrition & Dietary Supplements will report to a Director of Regulatory Affairs.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Principal Scientist, Nutrition & Dietary Supplements is a subject matter expert on nutrition, regulation and science-based claim substantiation for both dietary supplements and conventional spice & herb-based products. This position is responsible for providing the scientific and regulatory foundation for product formulations, labeling, advertising, social media content and claims for food and dietary supplements. Scientific and regulatory support in this area also includes the evaluation of ingredient safety, risk assessment, systematic scientific literature reviews resulting in the development of formal, documented support of science-based claims. This position is responsible for providing leadership, cross functional consultation and effective team-oriented efforts to drive business growth. Internally, the Nutrition & Dietary Supplements Scientist collaborates with key stakeholders such as Legal, Regulatory, Marketing, Product Development, Operations and Quality to drive business objectives. Externally he or she serves as a representative and key external influencer for related trade associations, scientific bodies, and regulatory agencies.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Mine current scientific research and relevant regulations for ingredients used in dietary supplements and homeopathic ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, probiotics, botanicals, spices and extracts.
  • Interpret and draw valid conclusions from scientific literature and evaluate the quality of clinical research to determine potential labeling and advertising claims according to regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensure consumer-facing marketing materials are aligned with the supporting science and regulation.
  • Interface with suppliers, contract research organizations and researchers to assist in the development of science-based next generation ingredients to support consumer health.
  • Actively participate in the new product development process from discovery and initial feasibility assessment through commercialization.
  • Engage with cross-functional groups and project teams to deliver timely results.
  • Evaluate safety data for existing ingredients, New Dietary Ingredients (NDIs) or Self-Affirmed GRAS applications.
  • Must have multi-task project management skills and technical agility, with the ability to prioritize and coordinate projects with a great degree of flexibility.
  • Engage with professional/trade associations and industry resources to understand, communicate and advise business on evolving legislation, regulation and related information and influence development in these areas based on the Company interests.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree (MS) in Nutrition Science, Biochemistry, Physiology or relevant science degree.

  • 4+ years of experience with emphasis in the nutrition, food, or dietary supplement industry.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders
  • Strong background in nutritional biochemistry and physiology. 
  • Proven leadership skills including initiative, communication, collaboration, creativity, bias towards action, and success even in the face of ambiguity.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD
  •  Nutritionist certification from accredited Board
  • Experience in design and management of clinical trials
