POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Distribution Team Manager I – Order Selection in Salinas, California, reports to the Distribution Center Manager and is responsible for all distribution activities associated with order selection/order picking, shipping, receiving,or warehousing for retail, Food Service and Industrial business across a 3-shift operation.
This Team Manager is expected to meet department and distribution objectives in the areas of efficiency, regulatory compliance, safety and training and administration of departmental budget, utilizing High Performance Work Systems (HPWS), the Team Manager continually designs, develops and supports operating procedures throughout the warehouse and supports employee development via coaching, mentoring, intuitive insight and facilitation skills
Provides leadership for a functional team within a high performance environment. Oversees the daily management of the function and drives improvement activities through the development of people and processes. Has overall accountability for the results of the team.
Good understanding of procedures and concepts within own technical area (Order Selection) and a basic knowledge in other areas and how they relate and interact with own area. Requires an understanding and ability to apply procedures and concepts of own technical area.
Oversees the activities of Technicians engaged in activities such as order selection/order picking, receiving, transporting, storing and shipping raw or finished good materials.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interactively leads, develops and guides high performance teams utilizing coaching, mentoring and solid facilitation skills; using a principle based management style.
- Manages processes for order selection, including labor management, budget compliance, quality, cost, root cause analysis, continuous improvement and reliability
- Utilizes coaching and facilitation skills to manage employee relations.
- Provides regular performance feedback and oversees development/training plans for individuals within the team.
- Actively uses performance and development tools to document and facilitate improvement/recognition discussions.
- Rewards and recognizes performance achievements.
- Removes barriers that prevent the team from achieving goals.
- Drives performance through use of core metrics and scorecards, reliability, waste, safety, sanitation, cost and other performance standards
- Leads high performance work teams in cross-functional projects
- Interacts cross functionally to resolve issues and ensure that customer service requirements are met
- Utilizes problem solving methodology and information systems (SAP, downtime database) to enable decision making and performance metric development
- Leads and participates in problem solving to evaluate, develop, document, and implement process improvement projects designed to improve reliability resulting in increased throughput and efficiencies
- Sets annual goals and objectives
- Executes long term strategies to drive and sustain team performance
- Demonstrates a sense of urgency and tenacity to resolve problems and implement process improvements.
- Leads root cause analysis when required for failures that meet the applicable threshold.
- Develops and ensures all functional procedures and best practices are documented and continually improved.
- Directs and supports the daily management of the team to prioritize work and achieve goals.
- Creates an atmosphere of 100% compliance to operational processes and procedures.
- Coordinates the sharing of resources to make the best use of existing skills to meet business needs. Ensures that procedures and scorecards are in place for the team.
- Communicates effectively up, down, and across the organization.
- Creates a vision for the team that is in alignment with the Plant, Division, and McCormick.
- Communicates organizational and plant objectives, including the attainment of established scorecard metrics (safety, quality, reliability, etc.) and ensures that they are understood and linked to the team's work.
- Manages interactions with other areas to support total plant objectives.
- Conducts regular team meetings to share information and ensure two-way communication.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma/GED
- Minimum 1 year leading and managing employees in a logistics, distribution, and/or manufacturing plant environment
- Minimum of 1 year of experience managing a team of direct reports within a manufacturing, production, distribution, warehouse and/or other industrial environment.
- Strong command of employee relations, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Experience developing and guiding functional and cross-functional teams, projects and processes
- Demonstrates participative management and leadership skills
- Demonstrated project management skills
- Proven ability to develop and guide staff in a High Performance environment
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
- Experience effectively utilizing team building for operations improvement in a logistics, distribution, and/or manufacturing plant environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop data-metrics, initiatives and solutions
- High level of motivation with a passion for high performance and functional excellence
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of a three- shift operation, even with little notice
- Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, color perception
- Ability to work in a cold warehouse environment (in sometimes extremely cold temperatures)
- Ability to lift up 10 pounds on a continual basis, 11-25 pounds on a frequent basis and 26-50 pounds on an occasional basis
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience using Microsoft Outlook
- Experience using an WMS system, particularly SAP, Power BI

Base Salary: $74,330 - $130,080
Base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience for this role, and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer. This position is also eligible to participate in McCormick’s Incentive Bonus (MIB) Plan.
