Scientist II, Materials & Processing Technology - Hunt Valley, MD

This new hire will work at the Technical Innovation Center located in Hunt Valley, MD. The Scientist II will report to the Materials and Process Technology Director.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Scientist II is responsible for managing complex technical projects as part of a global initiative through all phases of product design and launch to create superior products, intellectual property and competitive advantage for McCormick.  This Scientist will plan and implement applied research in Materials Science and be responsible for commercialization of new products, ingredients and technologies. This individual will be expected to contribute to technical problem solving for internal and external customers, as well as aid in new product innovation, development, scale-up, and analytical characterization including their effects on processing. This Scientist will also be expected to analyze and document results, then communicate these results to the technical community and management.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads the scientific work related to strategic technical projects and programs that make use of proprietary technology
  • Leads the discovery of new ingredients and technologies to drive new product innovation.
  • Provides expertise and technical guidance in the areas of food science, technology, and engineering to Product Development Scientists and Manufacturing/Supply Chain
  • Support new product commercialization and problem solving in manufacturing
  • Manages intellectual property for all current projects
  • Effectively present ideas, strategies, and achievements to functional teams and senior management

 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Engineering, or closely related food discipline with 5-7 years of R&D experience in the food, flavor, ingredient, and/or beverage industry
  • Relevant experience in fundamental and/or applied technology development
  • Experience managing large, complex projects
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills
  • Strong background in materials science, ingredient technology, food engineering, and food chemistry
  • Strong background in analytical methods (microscopy, particle size, rheology, calorimetry, food analysis) and sensory science
  • Strong background in statistics and experimental design
  • Effective verbal and written communications
  • Experience working with ingredient suppliers and product development
  • Experience collaborating and communicating effectively across levels and functions
     
     
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD specifically in Food Science, Food Chemistry or Engineering with 1-3 years of experience
  • Experience with spray drying, flavor encapsulation, emulsion technology, melt extrusion
  • Strong background in material characterization methods including rheology, particle analysis, microscopy, calorimetry
  • Strong background in food polymer science, starches, gums, emulsifiers, flavors
  • Experience with strategic planning
