We are looking to hire an  Associate Counsel - Americas Employment immediately in a Hybrid (50/50) capacity at our Global Headquarters in Hunt Valley, Maryland.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

As part of McCormick’s Legal Department, this position is an exciting opportunity to join a collegial, dynamic legal department and work with other in-house attorneys and professionals. The successful candidate will be a motivated and relationshipdriven problem-solver, who can provide clear, timely, and practical counseling to business leaders on labor and employment matters.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Strategic Advice and Counseling - Support Americas Employment legal strategy by advising HR and other business leaders on a broad spectrum of employment and labor law issues, including: o Recruitment and hiring practices o Performance management processes and employee separations o Workplace accommodations and leave management o Wage and hour compliance o Discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims o Collective bargaining agreements and union matters o Compensation, benefits, and employee privacy.  -Conduct legal research, draft internal guidance, and review internal employment policies and practices - Provide practical, responsive legal advice to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws - Collaborate with management on key legal issues to facilitate risk assessment and pragmatic decision making and to develop viable business solutions to potential legal issues
  2. Policies, Compliance & Investigations
    • Collaborate with HR to develop, implement, and update Americas employment policies, handbooks, and training programs
    • Support HR and Benefits teams to respond to various employee benefits inquiries
    • Assist with internal audits and investigations to ensure adherence to employment laws and company policies
    • Monitor and advise on developments related to employment laws, regulations, and orders to ensure compliance
  3. Dispute Resolution & Litigation
    • Provide support for employment-related litigation, including responding to attorney demand letters and administrative complaints
    • Assist with proceedings before agencies such as the EEOC, DOL, NLRB, and equivalent state bodies
    • Supervise and manage outside counsel to ensure high-quality, cost-effective legal services
  4. Cross-Functional Collaboration       

          • Participate as needed in cross-functional projects and initiatives, providing legal insights to support business strategies

          • Collaborate with international counsel to advise on global employment issues

          • Work collaboratively with key functional groups within McCormick

          • Participate in other legal matters, such as commercial, regulatory, or litigation matters, from time to tim international counsel to advise on global employment issues

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

        • Juris Doctorate degree, or equivalent, from an accredited law school

        • Admission to the bar and license to practice law in at least one US state 

        • 2+ years of substantive legal experience with a corporate legal department or a nationally recognized law firm, with emphasis in labor and employment, litigation, regulatory, or transactional practice areas

        • Willingness and flexibility to learn and master new and different legal practice areas

        • Ability to adapt to changing situations and handle an array of legal issues

        • Ability to develop, foster, and maintain long-term effective working relationships at all levels of the company

        • Ability to manage multiple matters, follow through, and provide sensible, responsive, and practical advice in a timely fashion

        • Excellent organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills; sound legal and business judgment

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

       • Labor and Employment legal experience, including knowledge of key U.S. employment laws, such as Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, and NLRA

       • Litigation experience

       • Spanish language skills a plus

       • Experience in the consumer products and/or manufacturing and distribution sectors a plus

Base Salary: $121,900 - $219,410

 

Base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience for this role, and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer. This position is also eligible to participate in McCormick’s Incentive Bonus (MIB) Plan.
