The Enterprise Cloud Architect is responsible for defining and governing the enterprise-wide cloud strategy, principles, and best practices. The role ensures that cloud solutions align with business goals, security requirements, and operational priorities while maximizing business value. Partnering with the Cloud Platform Owner, the architect provides technical leadership in cloud adoption and collaborates with business stakeholders, Cloud Solutions Architects, and Software Developers to deliver compliant, scalable, and value-driven cloud solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Cloud Strategy, Principles & Governance

  • Define, advocate for, and regularly update enterprise cloud strategy aligned with business objectives, broader IT strategies and industry trends.
  • Establish cloud principles, policies, standards, governance models and KPIs to guide cloud adoption and assess its maturity against strategic goals.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and governance of Cloud Service Providers.
  • Lead the Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) to drive cloud adoption, enforce cloud policies, and foster best practices, innovation, and knowledge sharing.

Enterprise Architecture & Design Leadership

  • Develop and revise cloud reference architectures for hybrid and multi-cloud environments, aligning with the Well Architected Frameworks.
  • Promote industry best practices as it relates to performance, scalability, resilience, security, and cost-efficiency of cloud solutions.
  • Act as a technical advisor to Cloud Solutions Architects, Platform Engineers, Software Developers, and other stakeholders, ensuring architectural alignment and compliance across the board.
  • Collaborate with Cloud Solutions Architects, Security Architects, Platform Engineers and Software Developers to ensure policies and standards are attainable and bolster design efficiency.

Security & Compliance

  • Ensure cloud architectures adhere to industry regulations, compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, SOC2, ISO 27001), and internal security policies.
  • Collaborate with Security Architects to establish and enforce cloud security baselines based on industry frameworks from NIST, CIS or CSA.
  • Define resiliency and disaster recovery architectures to minimize operational risk.

Financial Management & Business Value Optimization

  • Partner with the Cloud Platform Owner to develop budget proposals for cloud initiatives, aligning cloud investments with business value and operational efficiency.
  • Support the FinOps Manager by establishing architectural guidelines to ensure cost-effective cloud solution designs and implementing cloud cost optimization strategies.

Research & Innovation

  • Stay ahead of emerging cloud technologies and architectures, providing recommendations for strategic innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Lead evaluation of cloud technologies, frameworks and methodologies, driving proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and pilot programs before enterprise-wide adoption.
  • Promote modernization initiatives such as containerization, microservices, and AI-driven cloud strategies, integrating these and other emerging paradigms into the reference architectures.

 

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert and Google Cloud Environment
  • Security certifications such as CISSP, CCSP, or Certified Cloud Security Professional
  • Demonstrated experience in IT architecture, with proven expertise in cloud strategy, governance, and enterprise architecture
  • Experience leading large-scale cloud transformation programs in Fortune 500 or highly regulated industries
  • In-depth understanding of cloud-native services, serverless computing, microservices architectures, and containerization
  • Strong knowledge of security frameworks (NIST, CIS, CSA), compliance, and regulatory environments
  • Experience developing and governing cloud principles, policies, and best practices
  • Experience leading a Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) or similar governance body
  • Experience integrating emerging technologies (e.g, AI/ML) into cloud strategies
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and strong presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, translating them into business impact
  • Solid leadership skills, especially in informal settings
  • Experience mentoring and coaching technical teams on cloud strategy and best practices
  • Strategic mindset with a strong focus on business value creation through cloud investments.
  • A broad, enterprise-wide view of the business and varying degrees of appreciation for strategy, processes and capabilities, enabling technologies, and governance
  • Strong strategic and analytical thinking for cloud investment and business value creation
  • Moderate competencies in multiple Enterprise Architecture disciplines, such as Business Architecture, Application Architecture, Data Architecture and Infrastructure Architecture
  • Ability to assess and mitigate risks associated with cloud adoption and transformation
